Since 1986, the Richard Wagner Society has established itself not only as an exponent of the great composer, but as a society that helps establish young South African musicians.
It has gone far beyond its original mandate, which was to create an interest in and deepen the understanding of the works of Wagner and promote international co-operation amongst the 149 societies around the world. It has embraced the future stars by offering them not only exclusive performance experience in recitals but by offering platforms to as many of South Africa’s emerging singers in opera. Its success was acknowledged by the International Association of Wagner Societies which bestowed upon president Herbert Glöckner the prestigious Golden W medal.
The Society also offers members the opportunity to attend the annual Wagner Festival in Bayreuth most years, and arranges tours to, for instance, Berlin linked to this.
