Donizetti must be smiling at the way his opera, Le Convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali, also known as  ‘Viva la Mamma’ is turning out.  This opera, which was performed the first time in Italy in 1827, has been through several incarnations and this one takes it to a new level of fun, laughter, brilliant singing and acting. It’s an all-round theatrical experience and you have three chances to enjoy it at the Suidoosterfees at Artscape on February 16, 18 and 19.

Director Lara Bye has made this opera really sparkle, with dramatic singing, dancing and non-stop action. It has a gorgeous score and will be a non-stop laugh with lots of surprises as the cast of nine singers are faced with the realities of artistic life: no money. To a point, it mirrors life!

This is the fourth opera presented by the Richard Wagner Society, which aims to encourage and support young singers and give them a performing platform. Last year’s production, Der Fliegende Holländer, has been nominated for three categories of the Fiesta awards – best production, best set design (Craig Leo) and best classical music singer (Nkosazana Dimande), which bodes well for Viva la Mamma

Each performance is preceded by a free talk by FMR presenter Rodney Trudgeon one hour before.
